The New York Police warn that a sexual predator could hide in Puerto Rico

The New York State Police went out to ask for help to try to find a sexual predator of minors that he was released on bail and that he planned to hide in Puerto Rico.

This is a New York man accused of sexual assault against a child and other crimes who, as reported today, could be heading to the Island after being released due to bail reform laws in that state.

In 2019, New York made reforms to eliminate pretrial incarceration for most crimes. Thus, he eliminated bail for many nonviolent crimes and required appearance tickets instead of arrests for misdemeanors.

Almost two years after those changes, crime in that state has caused many to oppose the measure now and that Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed returning to judges the power to impose bail on suspected criminals awaiting trial and to expand the list of the type of crimes for which bail could be imposed.

In this context, the sexual predator managed to get out of prison and not show up at the hearing that was scheduled for last week.

The New York State Police identified the man as Luis D. Fernández, 46, a resident of Kingston, a city located an hour and a half north of Manhattan.

Fernandez did not appear in the Greene County Court and since yesterday the authorities activated a statewide alert to find him.

“The New York State Police in the Catskill is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Luis D. Fernandez, 46, of Kingston, NY,” local authorities said in a statement.

“Fernandez failed to appear in Greene County Court after being released on bond and is wanted on multiple felony charges, including predatory sexual assault on a child, a (Type) A felony, course of sexual conduct. against a child in the first degree, a serious offense B, and four counts of rape in the first degree, a serious offense B”, explains the statement that was also published on social networks.

Although he has not given details, the Police suspect that Fernández could be trying to flee to Puerto Rico, according to local media reports.

Fernandez is 6 feet 1 inches tall and weighs approximately 195 pounds.

He is also wanted by the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.

Any information on where Fernandez might be should be reported to (518) 622-8600.
