In the XVIII e century, the sensualism is an empirical philosophical current according to which all knowledge comes from sensations and not from reason. It is Condillac against Descartes. Condillac’s sensualism invests the subject as active in perception and gets involved as knowledge is acquired. It is the perceptual dimension of the subject that allows knowledge of the world and its objectivity (Essay on the origin of human knowledge, 1746). In this, Condillac s’opposed to reason, to Descartes’ cogito. This philosophical current will be little followed. In 1782, Rousseau did not say anything else in his Musings of the lonely walker : “We are born sensitive and, from our birth, we are affected in various ways by the objects around us. This is how thought is born, the artistic work is born.
This idea of knowledge through the senses, of creation in direct line with sensations, of the work that is imprinted (expressed) on the retina … has been developed by many artists, especially in the school of Nice with Armand, César, Sosno… D’others claim the term, sensualism, like the painter Jean-Yves Guionet, by taking up Condillac’s theoretical argument.
Leonardo Marcos is part of this sensitivity of perception guiding the work and creation. A multi-technical and multi-media artist, he expresses himself through films, photographs, digital installations and staging combining mannerism and new technologies around his first source of inspiration: women. Some have entrusted their image to him, such as Sophie Marceau, Arielle Dombasle, Caroline de Monaco… The works of Léonardo Marcos can be found in three books: Public images, private images, with a text by Catherine Robbe-Grillet in 2011; The Girls of the Stolen Notebook, with Régine Desforges in 2013; The Beauty Gallery, poems and 30 portraits of women in 2017.
Spring is intended to be an immersive experience in the artist’s psyche, a kind of intimate notebook covering the “confined” period from March 2020 to March 2021, and presenting equally digital works, photographs, films, poems … ” Behind closed doors and then outside, according to Leonardo Marcos, my creations continued, transfiguring themselves into poetic events in my private life. My beautiful muses accompanied me in the metempsychosis of my artistic adventure. Like an eternal return, they immersed themselves in the delights of the enchantment of femininity. Beyond the misfortune reigning on the planet, I went into exile in a sentimental, sensual, dreamlike and utopian happiness. In a year of pandemic, from one spring to the next, I produced multiple works, united under the name of ‘Primavera’. “
These deeply sensitive works are exhibited online by the Nomadic Gallery of Émilie Dujat in Brussels. The site will be put online in “preview” – what could be called a vernissage – is June 1, 2021, the day of this note.
Nomadic gallery virtual visit
Galerie Emilie Dujat, formerly Galerie Libertine, which settled in Henri Michaux’s childhood home at Le Châtelain, in Brussels, is today a “nomadic gallery” specializing in questions of identity, gender and the discovery of “human sexual fantasy”. It is exhibited in surprising places to adapt to the particular universe of each artist. For Spring, and depending on the current health context, this particular place is the web of the net and the virtual which palliate the face-to-face.
