Scandal in the Netherlands over allegations of sexual harassment in ‘La Voz’

The Prosecutor’s Office opens a criminal investigation due to complaints against at least four people who worked for the television contest

The Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened this Monday criminal investigation due to complaints about alleged sexual harassment and abuse of power filed against at least four people who worked for the television game show The voice from Hollanda scandal uncovered in January by dozens of victims.

The Public Ministry has so far recorded five complaints against four people linked to The voice, despite the fact that there were dozens of victims who denounced their cases in a program known as BOOSa YouTube broadcast of the public broadcasting network BNNVARAwhat spoke with the victims and uncovered the scandal in January.

The Prosecutor’s Office assessed the officially filed complaints and decided to initiate new criminal investigations in response to the five cases, and has described the four people named in those complaints as “suspects” for alleged rape, sexual harassment and abuse of power during their participation in the music contest.

The suspects have mostly been identified by the local press and have themselves disassociated themselves from the program due to the scandal, including the Dutch rapper Ali B (member of the jury), the composer Jeroen Rietbergen (leader of the musical band) and the singer Marco Borsato (who was a member of the jury). The fourth suspect is a program director.

Once the investigation is concluded, which according to the Prosecutor’s Office “will take a long time”, it will be decided if there is enough evidence to prosecute the suspects in a possible trial.

Since January, a increase in sexual harassment complaints in the world of television, sports and politicswhich has opened a social debate on this scourge that the Dutch government seeks to combat with the assignment of a commissioner for sexual harassment and violence.
