The economist Rodrigo Chaves assumed this Sunday, May 8, the presidency of Costa Rica for the period 2022-2026, upon being invested by the head of Congress, Rodrigo Arias.
Arias withdrew the presidential sash from the outgoing president, Carlos Alvarado, and placed it on Chaves, who won the first magistracy by beating former president José María Figueres in the second round on April 3.
“I am honored to receive this presidential sash in times of major challenges,” said Chaves, a former World Bank official who briefly joined Alvarado’s cabinet as finance minister.

The president, 1.85 m tall and graying hair, carries a sanction in that multilateral organization for sexual harassment, due to improper conduct between 2008 and 2013 with two young subordinates.
Chaves was sanctioned in October 2019 with a demotion to a position without dependents and the impossibility of a salary increase for three years. He resigned about a month later.
His defense was to point out that his attitudes were “jokes” and “misunderstandings in the face of cultural differences.”
“I have a wife, six sisters, eight aunts and two daughters; I have deep respect for all women,” she told AFP in February, ahead of the first round of elections.

A few days before assuming the presidency, offered “apologies” to the aggrieved.
On March 28, the Wall Street Journal insisted that Chaves continued his misconduct with staff in Indonesia between 2018 and 2019, when he headed that headquarters.

“You will have to make difficult decisions,” Arias commented to the new head of state, who took his oath on a bible held by his wife, Signe Zeicate.
Vice Presidents Stephan Brunner and Mary Munive also took their constitutional protest at the event, held at the National Assembly.
