Netflix star Sex education Ncuti Gatwa will replace Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord in Doctor Who, becoming the show’s first black lead, the BBC has announced.

Gatwa, 29, will become the 14th Doctor on the popular BBC show, after Whittaker announced last July that she was stepping down from the role.

Gatwa said he was “deeply honored” and “a little scared” to take on the role of Doctor Who on a show that means so much to so many.

He said: “There are no words to describe how I feel. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited and, of course, a little scared. This role and show means so much to so many people around the world, including myself, and each of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will do my best to do the same.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and to be able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly smart and full of danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.

“The whole team has been very welcoming and has really given their heart to the show. And as discouraging as it is, I am aware that I am joining a family that truly supports me. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart, but I’m giving it my all to this show.”

After 13 white stars played the Time Lord, Gatwa will be the first black actor to play the lead, as the show long ago established that the Doctor can change race and gender when he regenerates. The show recently featured Jo Martin as an earlier variant of the Doctor, though she only appeared in a handful of episodes in a supporting role.

Showrunner Russell T Davies said: “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks in the door and it’s so bright, bold and brilliant, that I stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars.

“Ncuti dazzled us, seizing the Doctor and taking the keys to the Tardis in seconds. It’s an honor to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing it for now, with Jodie’s wonderful epic finale to come. But I promise you that 2023 will be spectacular!”

Scottish actor Gatwa, who was born in Rwanda, played fan-favorite character Eric Effiong in Netflix’s hugely popular. Sex educationabout socially awkward high school student Otis (Asa Butterfield) and his sex therapist mother Jean (Gillian Anderson).
