Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: the chronology of love and scandal

On April 11, 2022, the trial began between the actors and former partner Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. The actor sued his ex-wife in 2019 for defamation and personal damages for $50 million. Months later the model countersued him for 100 million dollars. How did the accusations begin and how did they reach these millionaire demands?

Here is the timeline of the case:

2011: Johnny Depp and Amber Heard meet on the set of ‘Diary of a Seducer’ and begin dating after the actor’s breakup with French actress Vanessa Paradis.

2014: the couple is engaged

2015: The couple marry on Depp’s private island in the Bahamas.

2016, May: Amber Heard files for divorce from Johnny Depp, arguing irreconcilable differences exist. that same month, a judge grants Heard a restraining order against Depp for allegations of family violence on his part.

Heard alleges under oath that Depp threw a cell phone at her during a fight, yelled at her, violently grabbed her hair and punched her in the face. Submitting a photo of her with a bruise on her face, as proof of her domestic abuse.

The first judicial meeting between the Hollywood stars is based on this particular aggression, since Depp’s lawyers deny what happened and the Los Angeles Police were summoned to the stand for having received a call about domestic violence and having arrived at the scene did not find nothing.

2016, August: Heard and Depp sign divorce agreement where they published a statement mentioning that their relationship was “intensely passionate and sometimes volatile, but always united by love.”

2017, January: The divorce is made official and both parties declare that they want to leave behind everything related to the relationship.

2018, December: Amber Heard publishes in The Washington Post the opinion piece ‘I spoke out against sexual violence and faced the wrath of our culture. That has to change.’ Although Depp was not mentioned in the article, this would later become the basis of Depp’s $50 million libel lawsuit against Heard.

2019, March: Depp files the lawsuit and alleges that the actress and model defames him in the op-ed. Depp’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, called Heard’s accusation “categorically and demonstrably false.”

2020, August:Heard files a countersuit for $100 million against Depp in response to his libel lawsuit. The actress accuses him of allegedly orchestrating a “defamatory campaign” against her and continuing with the “mistreatment and harassment” of her person.

2022, April: the case begins for defamation of Depp against Heard, which includes witnesses such as James Franco, Elon Musk and Jason Momoa.

Several accusations and revelations about verbal, physical and psychological attacks between the two artists have been made in the trial. And although the chronology of the case continues to advance, the story of love and hate between these two actors has generated a deep debate in society about domestic violence, the movement ‘metoo’, toxicity in relationships and the possibility of false accusations in investigations of marital violence.
