Heartstopper: why Netflix’s romantic comedy deserves your attention

Because we were seduced by queer romantic comedy piercing At Netflix we offer you 3 good reasons to let yourself be tempted.

At Ecran Large we are used to unpleasant surprises. To soft or lazy superhero movies despite their 200 million dollars, to film noir films more innocuous than a part of Cluedo, or to action and adventure productions that make us regret our first Indiana Jones. On the contrary, some productions, Future Crimes From David Cronenberg to everything everywhere at once from the A24 team, sniffs out quality production that unsurprisingly thrills the editorial team.

However, today we are talking about a program that did not have the construction manager: piercing. A queer romantic comedy on Netflix that could have resembled all the clichés of the genre, with all that that entails of bodybuilding, wacky plots, opiate overdoses, and sex. However, it is nothing.

The series in eight 25-minute episodes adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels takes us back to the days when we read comics. lou with a flashlight under the duvet. So we give you some reasons to break the ice cream and start right now.

We were all fools at fifteen, no need to hide

If you’re thinking about the teen drama genre, you should probably remember Euphoria, 13 reasons why, Elite either Sex education (perhaps the oldest among you will also remember skins). In all these programs we find garbage, sometimes brilliantly distilled, sometimes without any parsimony. Now it has become common in these productions to show sex, eating disorders, self-mutilation (sometimes reaching suicide) or powerful drug addictions.

The representation of adolescence for Hollywood, that’s all. Taking tons of drugs, fucking a lot and having bad sanity. Inside piercingyou won’t find any of this. The series chronicles the meeting between Charlie (Joe Locke), a ninth grader who came out as gay a year earlier, and Nick (Kit Connor), a newcomer to second grade with whom he shares a class. They quickly become friends.

The series is a breath of fresh air in the romantic comedy genre. Yes, it is more accessible, since it is less loaded with shocking or explicit sequences, but it is also much lighter and more optimistic. You will feel butterflies in your stomach when you see couples forming, teenagers holding hands or kissing for the first time.

Nevertheless, piercing It ain’t dumb. No more than pimply fifteen-year-old teenagers, at least.. The series also manages to accurately tell the schooling of certain queer characters, by showing the multifaceted violence they suffer, without turning them into martyrs to create shocking images. In short, the worldpiercing It’s not quite pink and sugary, on the contrary, it’s quite realistic and avoids the pitfall of competing in the competition of the dirtiest.

You’ll even be entitled to references to Donnie Darko or Moonlight

The power of the series does not lie solely in its authentic character. piercing works as a romantic comedy first and foremost thanks to its solar casting which, for once, is close to the exception. Charlie and Nick are excellent leads, each in their own way, complementing each other perfectly.

Joe Locke makes Charlie seem mischievous and sensitive, without ever becoming an angsty cliché. He is strong enough to stand up to the homophobia of his high school bosses, while he is vulnerable enough to always doubt what he can bring to a romantic relationship. Nick is a true Labrador, benevolent, popular and energetic, disguised as Kit Connor.

We dare you not to enjoy seeing them together on screen.

If we find there the classic characteristic of adolescent drama (taking actors almost twenty years old to schoolboys barely fifteen, nobody is perfect), not being inundated with images of perfectly trained adult bodies is liberating (Riverdale, Euphoriawe think of you) for the youngest who will drink from the series, without immediately feeding complexes.

The rest of the cast is of the same ilk, closer to cool, hip high school students than adults in costume. All of them also have a design that makes their personality immediately accessible, but not without interest. You will have the pleasure of discovering them in British school uniforms with all that that entails of impeccable jackets and knotted ties. There’s even Olivia Colman, you wouldn’t want to let her down, would you?

Finally, if I were to be definitely convinced to give a chance to piercing, we would like to tell you about its staging. You have probably already realized that The images in the series contain on-screen animations. These are a legacy of the original form of the story, the graphic novel..

All these originalities don’t stop the series from delivering what you’d expect from a traditional teen rom-com. Whether it’s gigantic parties that end in a kiss, bullying in front of the high school, or sports lessons with locker room arguments, piercing it lives up to the genre by meeting its usual specifications.

However, the series finds some originalities, for example in the Instagram conversations that it manages to energize. This feeling of seeing a contact in the process of writing, then deleting their message, this expectation and finally this fear of a negative response (or worse, no response) when one trusts their interest, the series understood.
