Complaints of abuse and sexual violence in schools in Los Ríos increase in the last 12 months

Nearly 30 complaints of abuse and sexual violence in educational establishments have been registered in the last twelve months in the Los Ríos region, which represents an exponential increase in this type of complaint when compared to previous years, according to the Ministry of education in the region.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Education in the Los Ríos region, from 2018 to April 2021, a total of 39 complaints were filed for cases of mistreatment to students and infants from educational establishments in the region.

Meanwhile, only from May 2021 to April 2022, a total of 23 complaints of this type have been filed. In this way, only during this last period, about 60% of the total complaints made from 2018 and until part of 2021 were registered.

In detail, these figures refer to cases of mistreatment of adults against students or children and cases of mistreatment between students or children.

In the same way, from the Education portfolio they detailed that from 2018 to April 2021 a total of 5 complaints were filed for cases of sexual connotation in Los Ríos educational facilities.

Meanwhile, only from May 2021 to April 2022, 5 complaints of this type have been filed. In this way, only in this last period was the same number of complaints made from 2018 and until part of 2021 recorded.

In detail, the figures provided correspond to cases of sexual connotation between students or infants and cases of sexual connotation from adults to students or infants.

The foregoing would account for an exponential increase in the numbers of cases of sexual violence in establishments in the region, as stated by the Seremi of Education in Los Ríos, John Paul Gerterwho explained that there would be other cases that have not yet been reported.

This was affirmed in the context of the mobilizations registered this week in Valdivia, led by schoolchildren who accuse sexual violence in their schools.


It should be noted that both the complaints for cases of abuse and those associated with sexual violence decreased in figures during the years 2020 and 2021, which coincides with the suspension of face-to-face classes due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
