Another shameful case of sexual abuse of a minor occurred in the north of Valle del Aburrá, this time it is about a 19-month-old boy who was found with signs of physical violence, malnutrition and possible sexual violence, as reported by the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF).
The baby was sent to the Marco Fidel Suárez de Bello hospital without vital signs, however, the medical staff managed to revive him. Later, he was sent urgently to the Pablo Tobón Uribe hospital, where he had to undergo surgery, immediately, for damages that were caused, due to possible sexual abuse.
The minor is hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and his condition is critical. The ICBF announced that the baby will be placed in foster care after he is discharged from the hospital.
“We call on parents, neighbors and the community in general to take care of children and adolescents. We cannot allow these sad events to continue happening. If we had known in time of this mistreatment, to which this baby was subjected, the authorities would most certainly have intervened in the case “said Selma Patricia Roldán Tirado, Antioquia regional director of the ICBF
The ICBF reiterates its call not to allow any type of violation. Violence against minors should not be normalized.
According to figures from the Victims’ Judicial Representation Group of the Office of the Public Defender of the Ombudsman’s Office, In the first quarter of this year, a total of 1,178 powers of attorney were received in proceedings in which minors would have been victims of sexual abuse (895 of them were under 14 years of age).
According to that instance, that represented an increase of 9.5% compared to 1,075 registrations in the same period of 2021.
Increase in cases of abuse
The Ombudsman’s Office warned on Tuesday that this entity has increased attention to cases of sexual abuse against minors, which reflects the seriousness of the situation in the country.
The head of that office, Carlos Camargo rejected the recent cases registered in Galapa (Atlántico), where a baby would have been abused and murdered by her stepfather and that of another 13-year-old girl in El TarraNorte de Santander, also allegedly sexually abused by her stepfather.
Given this situation, the official called on society to protect and safeguard the rights of children and adolescents and establish protective environments that keep them away from violence.
“Precisely in the municipality of Galapa, in Atlántico, the painful case of a three-month-old girl who would have been the victim of sexual abuse allegedly by her stepfather, a 17-year-old adolescent, who was already captured by the authorities, became known.” assured the ombudsman.
Camargo added that “We require the authorities to speed up the investigation of the case and we make available the legal defense of the victim’s relatives.”
“It is very serious that acts against children and adolescents continue to occur. We are here to defend their rights and defend them in court, but the ideal is for their homes and schools to consolidate themselves as the protective environments par excellence,” she said.
The entity added that In addition to sexual crimes, minors continue to be the object of other types of violence.
“In the first three months of the year, 3,654 cases where the victims are minors have entered for judicial representation of the Ombudsman: 31% of the cases for the crime of sexual act with a minor under 14 years of age; followed by carnal access with children under 14 years of age in 24.5% “, he assured.
